Stephen worked with AXA Insurance to develop a one-day writing course for the Internal Communications Team. This course had a focus on planning and structuring documents, which had been identified as a particular training need:
“Although the staff in my department are skilled and experienced writers, we recognised that we had room for improvement. Some wanted to examine modern writing styles, others to look at editing techniques or issues of layout and design, and we all wanted to improve on how we plan and structure our texts. Stephen met all these needs.
Before the course, he found out what we do and what our place in the business is, and took the trouble to read many of our documents. He then used a simple questionnaire to identify each person's training requirements and what they hoped to gain from the course. This research enabled him to create a programme that was exactly right for us.
It was great to leave the office behind for a day and take time to review our methods and skills. And because Stephen used our own documents as illustrations and exercises it was all very relevant. In fact the course had an immediate impact on my work. Soon afterwards I had to write a 1,200-word Manager Guide. This would have taken me three days before, but I completed it in just four hours. I have discovered that it is worthwhile spending more time on planning the communication - the rest just flows.”
